Top-selling Audi A4 and Q5 models earn Insurance Institute TOP SAFETY PICK rating

Audi of America, Inc. announced that the Q5 and A4 models earned 2010 TOP SAFETY PICK ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The two best-selling Audi models join the Audi A3 in achieving the highest safety recognition granted by the influential IIHS. Today's news means Audi offers more vehicles with the TOP SAFETY PICK rating than any German luxury automaker.

For the 2010 model year and beyond, IIHS included a new rollover roof strength test. To earn TOP SAFETY PICK recognition, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good for roof strength in rollover crashes. To measure roof strength, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle's roof at a constant speed (pictured above). The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle's weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. This is a good assessment of vehicle structural protection in rollover crashes.

TOP SAFETY PICK also recognizes the vehicles that earn the highest rating of good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on all of these models. A vehicle earning a good rating can withstand a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle's weight. Current federal standards require a vehicle's roof to withstand 1.5 times total weight.

The A5 product line is now expanded to include Cabriolet models with three powerful and fuel-efficient powertrains.A5 Cabriolet features ground-breaking soft top technology for elegant styling, superior room and storage space, and superb driving dynamics.New optional Quattro Sport rear differential enhances agility.

Ingolstadt - Dynamic and wonderful to look at, the new A5 Cabriolet is a real Audi, and an especially exciting one at that. The four-seater with the fabric top combines a sporty character with the fascination of open-top driving, refined comfort, and great everyday utility. Seven powerful engines, an agile suspension and a wide range of high-end options make the new Audi model the most attractive mid-range convertible.

Like all open-top Audi models, the new A5 Cabriolet too has a classic fabric top - which endows it with a striking silhouette of dynamic elegance. The lightweight soft top opens in 15 seconds - and closes in 17 seconds. The fully automatic open/close drive comes as standard. An acoustic top is optionally available, which reduces wind noise almost to the hardtop level.

When opened, the Audi A5 Cabriolet top folds down so effectively that very little trunk space is used up - leaving 320 liters (11.3 cu ft) of unused storage volume, clearly the best value in its field of competitors. The soft top compartment lowers itself automatically when the top is opened.

Equally useful is the fold-down rear seat backrest with the large pass-through between the luggage space and the interior, which increases the storage volume to a generous 750 liters (26.49 cu. ft.).

Automatic seat belt extenders round out the comfort in the interior. Neck-level heating is optionally available for the front seats. The optional leather seats are coated with a special layer to reduce solar heating. There is comfortable room for four persons. The refined ambience combines with exemplary ergonomics to convey an atmosphere of sporty elegance. Ultra-high-strength steels and selective reinforcements of the body ensure maximal rigidity and crash safety.

The A5 Cabriolet is being launched with three gasoline engines and two diesel engines, with power outputs ranging from 132 kW (180 hp) to 195 kW (265 hp). All five powerplants are fueled via direct injection; four of them use turbocharging. Available power trains include a six-speed manual transmission, the continuously variable multitronic, and the lightning-fast, seven-speed S tronic.

In addition to front-wheel drive, Audi also offers quattro permanent all-wheel drive for the higher-power engines. The innovative sport differential, which variably distributes the propulsive power between the rear wheels, is optionally available to make quattro even more dynamic and even safer.

Whether you are looking for your dream car, a comfortable car for family trips, or an efficient means to travel to and from work, the Audi A4 sedan just may be the perfect fit for you.

The new Audi A4 sedan is available in two engines. According to Left Lane News, "the new 3.2 FSI is the most powerful engine available in the new A4. It develops 265 hp and also delivers 243 lb-ft of torque all the way from 3000 to 5000 rpm. The car accelerates with a manual gearbox from a standstill to 62 mph in only 6.2 seconds. As an alternative from 2008 onwards, this engine can be combined with the 6-speed tiptronic automatic transmission." The smaller of the two engines, the compact four-cylinder Audi A4 2.0T, has a 2.0 liter turbocharged direct injected inline-4 engine producing 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm.

Motor Trend mentions that the new Audi A4 sedan has "stretched nearly five inches overall, more than two inches wider, and is on a six-inch-longer wheelbase than the previous generation. The interior also was completely redesigned, and the high-quality materials and clean, attractive design continue to live up to Audi's stellar reputation as the industry benchmark. The cabin is larger in every dimension, front and rear seats are more comfortable, and there's more rear-seat legroom than in the outgoing model. The trunk is significantly larger, too -- now 17.0 cubic feet, up from 13.4."

Edmunds recognizes the new Audi A4 sedan for its handling abilities and safety features. "Diving enthusiasts will appreciate that the drivetrain's AWD layout has been adjusted to improve weight balance for better handling. In addition, the optional Drive Select system permits the driver to adjust ride compliance, steering effort and shift response -- there are three different preset modes as well as a personalized mode where you can mix and match settings."

Edmunds continues on with Audi safety features, "All 2009 Audi A4s come standard with antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags (except Cabriolets). Rear-seat-mounted side airbags are available as an option for the sedan and wagon. In government crash testing, the A4 garnered perfect five-star scores for both front and side impacts. Likewise, in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, the A4 without the optional rear-seat airbags nonetheless earned perfect ratings of "Good" in both frontal offset and side impact crash testing."

Audi Q5 - What the Auto Press Says

The 2010 Audi Q5 ranks 1 out of 7 Luxury Compact SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 17 published reviews and test drives of the Audi Q5, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
Released just last year, the Audi Q5 remains unchanged for 2010. As Audi's first luxury compact SUV, it's slotted below the midsize Q7 and is based on the same platform as the A4 sedan.
Reviewers have plenty of praise to offer this young SUV, going so far as to say that is spectacular performance rivals sport sedans. "Q5 offers a level of refinement and cargo AND passenger versatility unmatched by most compact SUVs," writes Consumer Guide. "Those strengths, coupled with first-rate cabin appointments, put it at the head of the class. Prices can inflate quickly when options are added and Audi's MMI system still takes some getting used to, but overall, Q5 is a leading competitor in this quickly mushrooming class."
So far, the Q5's only major downside is its steep base price. Another sticking point is that it only offers a six-cylinder engine. Reviewers had hoped a more fuel-efficient option would be offered for 2010, but a hybrid model is now expected instead for 2011.
The Q5 comes in one trim with Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system. Since the 2010 Q5 is nearly identical to the 2009 model, this review uses data from both model years.
"We came away very impressed by the 2009 Audi Q5. It clearly has surpassed the aging BMW X3 in terms of exterior styling, interior ambience, drivability, and comfort. Audi will face plenty of challengers in this segment, though, from the new Mercedes GLK and Volvo XC60, as well as from the existing entries from Acura, Land Rover, and BMW.
"In what has become a recurring theme for every new car wearing the four shiny rings, the Q5 offers just-right styling outside, a beautiful and comfortable interior and equally impressive levels of comfort and performance." --
"The Q5 does an incredible job balancing luxury with a genuinely sporting character. It's more than a strong competitor, but we'll have a truer sense of value when pricing is announced.
"If you've already decided that you need one vehicle to do it all, the only reason not to consider the Q5 is because you're holding out for the new engine option in 2010. The Q5 drives like an A4, has the best fit and finish in its class, and is the best looking of the bunch. Stop in or call Fred Baker Audi today for a test drive in the New 2010 Audi Q5
